NEWS FROM COMIC CON

As many comic book nerds know, the San Diego Convention Center is currently housing the now highly publicized event know as Comic Con. This event plays host to more than just comics these days with movie studios releasing all sorts of new trailers, posters, and details about their upcoming projects. Some day The Movie Mash will be down there giving readers updates from the source, but for now, we will just start with keeping you updated on the news from other reporters.

First things first, Joss Whedon (Serenity) has finally been officially confirmed to direct The Avengers movie set to be released in 2012. Sitting next to J.J. Abrams, Whedon confirmed his role as director for the superhero overloaded film that he also co-wrote the script with Zak Penn. This news is no shock to avid movie blog readers as this decision has been speculated upon for months now. Even with that said, it is still nice to see the studio getting appropriately geared up for a film that is now just two years away.

Speaking of The Avengers, if you saw Iron Man 2 and stuck around past the credits you were treated to a snippet of content showing that members of the agency S.H.I.E.L.D found the hammer of Thor in the middle of a huge crater out in the desert. This of course is a lead in to the Thor movie which is currently filming and is set to be released May 2011. Small bits of information have surfaced about the film like the casting of the ripped Chris Hemsworth, the talented Natalie Portman, and Hollywood icon Anthony Hopkins.

Entertainment Tonight was onset a month ago and interviewed a few of the film's stars which can be seen here. The studio now has recently released a slew of photos to prep Comic Con faithful for a peek into the movie that will be shown at Comic Con. This look is supposed to give audiences a feel for Thor which images alone cannot provide. My favorite picture has to be the banner for this article (seen above) of Thor and his hammer in action. While the image of course is just concept art, I think this is a good indication of what the filmmakers have in mind for the character. Along with the Thor concept art is an awesome Captain America piece showing the hero on a WWII battlefield that can be seen here.

The most recent Thor photo dropped in Wednesday's edition of USA Today and shows Hemsworth and his first encounter with his hammer known as Mjolner. After the hammer drops from the sky, no one was able to move Mjolner. Instead of continuing efforts to move the seemingly unmovable hammer, S.H.I.E.L.D just builds a base around it. I am not going to lie, this picture looks pretty tantalizing to me. Hemsworth obviously fits the built for the god Thor, and this image proves it. His arms look like my thighs under an electron microscope.

Below you can see official photos from the set which has the Thor faithful skeptical. The costumes do look a little eccentric, but you can never judge a book by its cover; or judge a film from movie stills. That said, wait for the Thor trailer to drop before drawing early conclusions. Even then you can never judge a movie by its trailer. I think it is best to wait until May before passing judgment. When the new Thor trailer drops, the Movie Mash will have it for your own personal evaluation.
